I purchaced it knowing that I would need to replace the intake and exhaust manifold-to-head gasket. Next I noticed that there were cracks around all 3 bolt holes. I found an f at my local salvage yard with an il six. I pulled the intake and exhaust manifold out. The exhaust manifold was pretty rusted and the surface was pretty pocked but the intake was in good shape. I got home and put them together finger tight. I placed the assembly on the two outer studs on the head. Here lies my problem I cannot get everything aligned!

I'm new at this. What am I doing wrong? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Then tighten the assembly onto the head proper sequence, proper torque, etc. If you cinch the two halves together first, that may misalign the two manifolds like you have observed. Also, there are special extra thick manifold washers to bridge the difference between the manifolds. There were some photos and discussion of these washers in past posts. Supporter Exhaust manifolds that have been used extensively have a tendency to warp and shrink over time.

It could be that the manifolds are distorted. Place a new gasket over the used manifold to determine how much it distorted. While you are at you better check the mounting surface for flatness. There is a lot to be said for buying exhaust manifolds new. Install the exhaust manifold- 2 to the cylinder head. Install NEW exhaust manifold to cylinder head retaining nuts- 1 finger tight. Tighten the NEW exhaust manifold to cylinder head retaining nuts two passes in sequence:Tighten first pass in sequence to Y lb-in.

Tighten final pass in sequence to Y lb-in. Install the block heater- 1. Tighten the bolt to Y lb-in. Install the exhaust manifold heat shield- 1. Install the exhaust manifold heat shield bolts and tighten to 9-Y lb-in. Coat the threads of the oxygen sensor- 1 with antiseize. Refer toAdhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers.
